Our Past and Current

Friends & Role Models

Mary Fougere is the founder of the Friends of the Suncook River and was its President and its guiding force for over a decade. She is a school teacher in Gilmanton. Thanks to Mary education is a cornerstone in the charter and mission of the group. The Suncook River watershed has proven to be an outstanding classroom for people of all age groups.

A founding member, past officer and member of the Friends, Mr. Orff was the New Hampshire Fish and Game Departments’ furbearer biologist and the Region 3 Regional Wildlife Biologist, covering the southeast area of the State from his office in Durham until his retirement. He was the departments’ black bear biologist for nearly two decades and earned the title of “NH’s bearman” as well. He is one of the New Hampshire's leading conservationists. His extensive professional an personal network of  friends and associates involved in New Hampshire conservation and environmental issues in the  public (university and state agencies) and private arena kept the organization plugged into the conservation fabric within the state. For several years Mr. Eric's activity with an aluminum can recycling program keep the Friends funded. Those funds still represent a major portion of the groups cash assets. His commitment to New Hampshire environmental and conservation issues are deeply entrenched in the Friends charter and corporate mission which directs the groups past, present and future activities.

Past Member Carl Wallman is the founder and driving force behind NALMC - Northwood Area Land Management Collaborative. This environmental and land conservation group's area of interest is just east of the Suncook River watershed. They are responsive for several properties placed under conservation protection, the creation of local hiking trails, and many land protection lectures and activities.

Mr. Wallman owns and operates Graylag Cabins on a local area lake. Unlike other historic properties/retreats, Graylag operates under a commitment  to Green Living with natural landscape, composting, recycling, natural and local products, and respect for local plant and animal life.

Past member William Provencal was originally hired by the Friends to maintain the organization's website. Bill is a retired professor at the New Hampshire Technical Institute. He is an active community leader in Pittsfield and currently  is a member of the Old Home Day Committee and the Pittsfield Natural Resources Committee which maintains the Nature Trail in the Sargent Town Forest. He is also a town trustee of Trust Funds and an active Pittsfield Historical Society officer.
